A little mouse zooms about changing letters—for example, substituting P for C to change a Cup into a Pup. A beginning reader rhyming extravaganza that emphasizes initial sound substitution.

From Booklist
Gr. 1-2. From the Step into Reading Early series, this "phonics reader" gives children practice with sounds by changing the first letters in a series of words. A hardworking mouse in overalls constructs, deconstructs, and reconstructs words. For instance: "Find the word FAN. Blow away the F. Move in a V. Honk! Now it is a VAN!" Net changes to pet, ten to hen, bug to hug, and so on. Joseph illustrates the simple text with color, action, and style, using large letters forming the words as physical elements that the good-natured mouse manipulates in the pictures. A playful choice for beginning readers working with initial consonants. Carolyn Phelan

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 1-Words presents the concept of initial-sound substitution as Mouse makes new words by changing the first letter: "hat" becomes "cat," "hog" becomes "log," and so on. Jack and Jill uses rhymes and repetition to tell the story of a boy, a girl, and their dog's repeated trips up a snowy hill and sled rides down again. Lively, full-color drawings illustrate the action in both books. Large print, repetitive word use, and a predictable pattern make these titles suitable for beginning readers.
